Ferritin (ng/mL)
Ferritin measures the protein that stores iron in your cells, making it the standard blood marker of the body’s iron reserves. People test it to investigate fatigue, heavy periods, endurance-training demands, or restless legs, and because low iron stores are among the most common and most fixable lab findings.

The importance of Ferritin
Ferritin is the body’s iron warehouse, and the small amount circulating in blood tracks total stores fairly well. Low ferritin is the earliest lab signal of iron depletion, it falls well before hemoglobin does, so a person can have completely normal red-cell counts while running on empty reserves, often feeling fatigue, hair shedding, or poor exercise tolerance first.
The complication is that ferritin is also an acute-phase reactant: infection, inflammation, liver stress, and heavy alcohol use all push it up, masking true iron status. A normal-looking ferritin in someone with active inflammation can hide genuine deficiency, which is why it is often drawn with hs-CRP or a full iron panel.
Persistently high ferritin without inflammation raises different questions, hereditary hemochromatosis, fatty liver, and metabolic syndrome among them, and is worth investigating rather than dismissing. Menstruating women, frequent blood donors, endurance athletes, and people on plant-based diets run low most often; both ends of the range are worth reviewing with your doctor.
