Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) measures the percentage of hemoglobin in red blood cells that has glucose attached, reflecting average blood sugar over roughly the past three months. The importance of HbA1c
Because red blood cells live about 90–120 days, HbA1c integrates thousands of moment-to-moment glucose values into one number. That makes it far less sensitive to a bad night’s sleep or a stressful morning than a fasting glucose reading, and better suited to tracking trends across months and years.
An HbA1c that climbs from 5.2% to 5.6% over a few years is still “normal” on paper, but the direction of travel is associated with declining insulin sensitivity and is worth noting early. Conditions that change red-cell lifespan, anemia, recent blood loss, some hemoglobin variants, can skew the result in either direction.
