LDL Cholesterol (mg/dL)
LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) measures the amount of cholesterol carried by low-density lipoprotein particles, the particles most closely associated with plaque buildup in arteries. It is the most widely tracked lipid marker, and people test it to monitor cardiovascular health and the effect of diet, lifestyle, or medication.

The importance of LDL-C
LDL particles ferry cholesterol through the bloodstream, and when they are numerous or linger too long, some cross into artery walls and contribute to plaque. Decades of research associate lifetime LDL-C exposure with cardiovascular disease, which is why the marker anchors nearly every standard lipid panel.
LDL-C responds to saturated-fat intake, fiber, body weight, genetics, thyroid function, and menopause, among other factors. Some people carry genetic variants, familial hypercholesterolemia being the best known, that keep LDL-C very high regardless of lifestyle, and values above roughly 190 mg/dL raise that possibility.
Interpreting LDL-C works best in context: alongside ApoB or particle count, HDL, triglycerides, blood pressure, and family history. If your LDL-C sits above 130 mg/dL on repeat tests, or above 160 mg/dL on any test, the result and your overall risk picture are worth discussing with your doctor.

What is a normal LDL cholesterol level?

Do I need to fast before an LDL test?
Often no. Modern guidelines accept non-fasting lipid panels for most people because LDL-C changes only modestly after meals. If your triglycerides are high, however, the calculation labs use for LDL-C becomes less accurate, and your doctor may request a fasting redraw or a direct LDL measurement.
Can LDL be high even with a healthy lifestyle?
Yes. Genetics strongly influence LDL-C, and some people, including those with familial hypercholesterolemia, have high values despite excellent habits. Hypothyroidism, menopause, and certain medications can also raise LDL-C. Persistent elevation despite lifestyle effort is a pattern worth discussing with your doctor.
How is LDL cholesterol different from ApoB?
LDL-C measures the mass of cholesterol inside LDL particles, while ApoB counts the particles themselves. They usually move together, but in people with small, numerous particles, common in insulin resistance, LDL-C can look reassuring while ApoB is elevated. Testing both resolves the ambiguity.
